Free Genealogy Advisory Service
Please note
There will be reduced consultations provided by our Genealogy Advisory Service (GAS) during December as a result of the National Archives closure on the following dates:
- Tuesday 24 December 2024 – Wednesday 1 January 2025 inclusive
Genealogy-related queries sent to the GAS during the Christmas and New Year period will be responded to after the service reopens on Thursday 2 January 2025.
Our Genealogy Advisory Service is now available as a face-to-face and email service. Please note that this is an advisory service and not a research service. The genealogist on duty will provide you with advice and guidance for progressing your own research, but cannot undertake research on your behalf.
Assistance will be available during regular office hours on a walk-in first-come-first-served basis, no appointment is necessary: 10:00am-1:00pm, 2:00pm-5.00pm [Irish Standard Time], Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). Emails received each day will be answered over the next 5-10 working days.
The service is provided on behalf of the National Archives by an external panel of professional genealogists, all holding credentials from Accredited Genealogists Ireland (AGI). There is only one genealogist working each day and so the speed of response will depend on the level of demand.
Before attending the Genealogy Advisory Service or sending a query via email, have you consulted our Sources for Family History booklet, and FAQ pages.
If availing of the email service we kindly ask you, if possible and relevant, to fill in and return, via email attachment, the following questionnaire. If you cannot fill all of it, do not worry, it is simply to assist the genealogist with reviewing your information.
Please send your enquiry to the following email: [email protected]
