We have recently completed a series of updates to the 1926 Census database to improve accuracy and ensure the records reflect the most complete information available. These updates draw on internal review work within the National Archives, feedback from the public, and routine quality‑assurance processes.
What has been updated
The latest release includes:
- Corrections identified through National Archives review, including issues highlighted through internal quality checks and Exception Reports.
- Updates based on transcription corrections submitted by members of the public, where the original household forms supported a change.
- Redactions for individuals aged over 100 who requested that their personal data not be displayed, in line with data‑protection requirements.
- Updates to institutions plotted on the map, ensuring all relevant institutions are correctly represented and linked to their census entries.
- The addition of approximately 1,400 previously missing individuals, identified through internal validation and system checks.
These updates strengthen the overall accuracy of the database and ensure that users have access to the most complete and reliable version of the census through the National Archives website.
Ongoing work on transcription updates
While many transcription updates have now been applied, not all corrections submitted to date have been processed yet. We continue to work through these systematically, reviewing each suggestion against the original census forms.
If you have submitted a correction and do not yet see it reflected on the site, we would ask for your patience, as your request is still in the queue, and we are committed to ensuring that all verified updates are incorporated.
New feature in development
We are also developing a new feature that will allow the public to submit transcription updates directly, like the system used on the 1901/1911 Census pages.
This tool will:
- ask users for the key information needed to review a correction
- automatically include a link to the relevant census record
- streamline how updates are submitted, reviewed, and applied.
What’s coming next
Our next scheduled update will focus on:
- Resolving issues with Form B records in Dublin, including missing or mis‑associated entries.
- Adding further missing records identified through ongoing review.
- Addressing transcription errors logged through public queries, following verification against the original census forms.
Regular updates
We will continue to release updates on a regular basis as further corrections are verified and new material is processed.
We encourage users to check back periodically to see the most up‑to‑date version of the 1926 Census.
