The National Archives is committed to fulfilling its obligations under this Act by making our services accessible and fair for everyone.

Our Access team is dedicated to ensuring that our services and facilities are accessible to all. Our goal is to make your visit to the National Archives, whether online or in person, as informative and enjoyable as we can.

Accessing the National Archives
The lift in the entrance hall on Bishop Street takes you to the main ground floor level. This level contains our reception, Genealogy Advisory Service, locker room and toilets.
The main building lift goes to the Reading Room and other facilities, including the Duty Archivist’s office and toilets.
Reading Room
The Reading Room is on the 5th floor. You can only get there by lift or stairs. The entrance doors to the Reading Room are fully automated, controlled by a sensor.
To access our Reading Room you must have a valid reader’s ticket.
Evacuation in an emergency
‘Evac+Chairs’ are available for use in the event of an emergency evacuation of the Reading Room and other facilities. Staff are trained to use these, if needed.
