It’s easy to order on-site archives while you are researching in the Reading Room. If the archives you need are stored off-site, you can order them in advance of your visit.

How to order on-site archives

 

Most of our records are stored on-site and can be ordered on the day of your visit to the Reading Room.

  1. Use the Reading Room finding aids to identify the reference code of the archive
  2. Fill in the order docket and give it to a Reading Room staff member
  3. The staff member will arrange to retrieve it from storage
  4. Present your reader’s ticket to scan the archive out – it will be recorded in our document management system

About off-site archives

Some of our collections are kept off-site. If you wish to consult these archives in the Reading Room, you can order them in advance of your visit.
Please do not arrive to consult these records until your order has been confirmed

 

–             A large quantity of Departmental records accessioned between 2004 and 2023*

–             Board of Guardians

–             Business records

–             Companies Registration Office (CRO/1)

–             Department of Education (ED/4, ED/5)

–             Department of Justice (Prison Registers)

–             Early court records up to and including the mid-1970’s

–             Early files from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA/1, DFA/2, DFA/3, DFA/5)

–             Industry & Commerce (INDC/IND, INCD/EMR, INDC/MIN, INDC/POW)

–             Local Appointments Commission

–             Mercantile Marine Office; Fishing Boat Agreements 1922-1979

–             OPW series 1, 2, 7, 8, 9

–             Ordnance Survey (OS/58, OS62, OS/63, OS/65)

–             Some Private Accessions*

–             Testamentary records (Wills) before 1975

 

*Please get in touch with us if the files that you wish to consult may be contained in any of the above, and we will be happy to confirm.

You will need:

 

  • A valid reader’s ticket number
  • Confirmation that the archives you are ordering are off-site
  • The correct reference code(s)

 

You can order a maximum of six items at any one time. For larger research projects that require access to more material, just email query@nationalarchives.ie and we can help plan access.
