The Story of Us: Independent Ireland and the 1926 Census is a major new publication produced by the National Archives to mark the release of the 1926 Census. Edited by Orlaith McBride and Dr John Gibney, the book brings together leading historians, archivists and scholars to explore the first census undertaken in the Irish Free State and the many stories it reveals about a society emerging from revolution.

Through a series of richly illustrated essays, the volume examines daily life, work, migration, culture, housing, language, and the changing social landscape of Ireland in 1926. Drawing directly on the newly released census returns, it offers fresh insights into the lived experience of nearly three million people at a pivotal moment in the history of the State.

The book is available to purchase directly from Irish Academic Press:
