Introduction to National Archives Act and obligations
The National Archives provides introductory training on National Archives legislation and departmental obligations under the Act. The training outlines:
- The work of the National Archives and the legislative framework in which it operates
- An overview of basic records management principles and practices
- The interaction between the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) framework and the National Archives Act
The training is usually held onsite at the National Archives, Bishop Street, Dublin and includes a tour of the repository.
Departmental records transfer training
Government departments, court offices or bodies cited in the schedule of the National Archives Act, 1986 are legally obliged to transfer records that are 30 years old to the National Archives. This is to facilitate public access and their permanent preservation as archives.
The Departments of State are responsible for preparing their records for transfer to the National Archives. There are specific procedures and accompanying documentation for transferring records to the National Archives. We offer record transfer training to assist in the preparation of records for transfer.
We require all transferring bodies to attend transfer training prior to the transfer of records.
Typically, transfer training consists of a half-day session at the National Archives and includes an introduction to our work, the requirements for transferring records and a tour of the repository. Online options may be available.
Following on from transfer training, we offer workshops on physically preparing and listing records for transfer with small teams in their own offices.
Courts records transfer training
The Court Records Section provides transfer training specially tailored to court offices, using examples from our current holdings and providing guidance on the preparation of court records. The training follows a similar format to the departmental records transfer training described above and usually takes place at the National Archives.
