Permission to publish

If you wish to use material from the National Archives in publications for commercial or non-commercial purposes you must get permission. Archives are subject to copyright and any researcher who publishes images without receiving prior approval may be in breach of copyright legislation.

 

  • Digital images required for publication must be ordered from the National Archives.
  • All material required for publication must undergo a conservation assessment. There is a fee for publication rights.

 

Attribution and acknowledgement

 

All licensed materials must include attribution to the National Archives, citing the correct document reference code.

 

Acknowledgement of National Archives material should use the following form of words: ‘Reproduced with the kind permission of the Director of the National Archives.’

 

Copying

 

  • The National Archives uses archival-standard scanning and photography equipment by specialist-trained staff.
  • No third parties will be facilitated to copy material held in the National Archives.
  • Please provide sufficient notice to ensure the material is ready for publication.

How we use your data

The National Archives is committed to protecting your personal data. We retain your information only as long as necessary for its intended purpose. Once no longer needed, it will be securely destroyed in accordance with the Department of Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport's policy.
