Before photographing items, researchers must:

Researchers must hand in the completed form to the duty archivist’s office at the end of their visit. If a researcher forgets to return the form, they will be contacted to ensure it is submitted.

Permitted devices

You are permitted to use a handheld camera, phone, tablet or laptop to capture still images of documents.

Rules for photographing documents

  • To ensure long-term preservation and document access, items must be handled with the utmost care.
  • Flash photography is prohibited to prevent damage to light-sensitive documents.
  • Using tripods or scanning devices, including hand-held scanners, is not allowed.
  • Disturbances should be kept to a minimum to ensure a conducive research environment.
  • To ensure the integrity of the archive, documents within a file must not be disassembled, removed or reorganised in any manner.
  • Copying tightly bound volumes or delicate materials is not permitted.
