The National Archives provides a free genealogy advisory service staffed by professional genealogists. The genealogist will give you advice and guidance. They will not do your family history research for you.
Our service operates in-person or online.
In-person genealogy service
Our in-person genealogy service is a drop-in service; no booking is required.
The genealogy service is located on the ground floor of the National Archives. You do not need a reader’s ticket to use the service. If you wish to consult the archives after visiting the genealogist, you can apply for a reader’s ticket at the front desk.
Monday to Friday: 10am to 5pm, closed 1pm to 2pm
Online genealogy service
To use the online service complete the form with all the information you have about your family history research. You do not need to answer all the questions.
The information you give will help the genealogist to review your family information. You will receive a response to your query by email.

Hiring a professional researcher
Professional researchers employed by members of the public can access our collections with a valid reader’s ticket. No special access is provided for professional researchers.
