About the National Archives
National Archives was established on 1 June 1988 following the amalgamation of the State Paper Office and the Public Record Office of Ireland.
Our vision is to ensure the future of the public record, visibly contributing to the cultural life and memory of Irish society.
Collection Care & Public Services
Collection Care and Public Services is comprised of a number of sections, including Public Services, Archive Repository and Digital Management and Conservation Services.
Archives & Government Services
Archives and Government Services is primarily responsible for collecting and managing records as stipulated by statute in the National Archives Act, 1986.
Governing legislation
National Archives works within a broad legal framework to facilitate access and to ensure the permanent preservation of archives in its care.
National Archives Advisory Council
National Archives Advisory Council advises the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in the exercise of her powers under the National Archives Act, 1986.
Policies
National Archives has developed a number of policies to ensure the provision of a high quality public service and the permanent protection and preservation of archives.
Publications
National Archives is obliged to produce a number of statutory publications, including the annual Director’s Report and the report of the National Archives Advisory Council.
