Archives and Government Services oversees the management, transfer, and disposal of State records as stipulated in the National Archives Act, 1986.
Responsibilities under legislation
Government departments, court offices or bodies cited in the schedule to the National Archives Act, 1986 are legally obliged to transfer records over 30 years old to the National Archives. This is to facilitate public access and their permanent preservation as archives.

Disposal of records
Destruction of departmental records is prohibited under section 7 of the National Archives Act, 1986. Permission must first be granted by the Director of the National Archives, and a Certificate for the Disposal of Departmental Records issued.
Records management
Records management is the process by which information is managed throughout its lifecycle. Any records management policy developed by Departments of State should be based on their statutory (business) functions.
Training
All Departments of State are responsible for preparing their records for transfer to the National Archives. There are specific procedures and accompanying documentation for transferring records to the National Archives. We offer record transfer training to assist in the preparation of records for transfer and it is obligatory to attend.
