Appraisal request form

Requests for disposal must be made at a file series level on the official Disposal Request Form. Any requests that are not received on the official form, or which fail to identify file series, will not be considered and will be returned to the requesting body.

Departmental actions

  1. Complete the Appraisal Request form. Ensure the form below is filled out in full, including details of a relevant contact person who can coordinate access with Officers of the National Archives.
  2. Coordinate requests
    Requests should be coordinated within Departments of State to ensure a consistent and standardised approach across all divisions. Departmental Records Managers and Archivists should be included in any application for disposal.
  3. Confirm record locations
    Ensure the location of records is known and access can be given to Officers of the National Archives.
  4. Align with retention schedule
    Where possible, align applications with an agreed retention schedule, demonstrating consistent records management practices.

Follow-up survey

Upon receipt of a Request Form, the National Archives will arrange for a follow-up survey of records, where required. Please see our Disposal of records section for more information.

 

Processing delays

Due to current staffing levels, delays in the processing of applications are inevitable. We will respond to your request as quickly as possible.

How we use your data

The National Archives is committed to protecting your personal data. We retain your information only as long as necessary for its intended purpose. Once no longer needed, it will be securely destroyed in accordance with the Department of Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport's policy.
